Clare Valley History
The Clare Valley, named after County Clare in Ireland, with rolling hills - emerald in winter and yellow in summer.
German Jesuit priests fled religious persecution in Silesia (Prussia) and Austria in what was to become modern Germany - now in Poland. They came to South Australia, moved to the Clare Valley and planted their first vines back in 1851 at Seven Hill - merely 15 years after Australia’s first free European settlers had come to start their new lives in South Australia. (South Australia was always a mercantile and free settlement colony that didn’t have convicts in the founding years).
Australian Rieslings are much dryer than their European counterparts, which tend to be sweeter! If you love Riesling, than you have definitely come to the right place? Welcome to the Clare Valley!
